How do I read slope off a word problem quickly?

Every linear word problem I get, I spend a minute working out which number is the slope and which is the intercept. Is there a trick for spotting it?

Find the phrase with “per” or “each” in it — that is your slope, because it is a rate. Whatever is true at the start, before anything changes, is the intercept.
